AYURVEDIC VITILIGO TREATMENT

AYURVEDIC VITILIGO TREATMENT
Ayurveda as a science uses age old formulations and herbal preparations in combination with nature’s precious resources. A number of diseases have ultimately been cured by Ayurveda once believed incurable in the modern scientific world. In this blog we shall review the various treatment modalities of vitiligo and look at Ayurveda as a separate treatment option.

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune dermatological disorder where the pigment producing cells called melanocytes are attacked by our body’s natural immune mechanism. This results in the lack of melanin pigment and causes white patches on the body.

Following are the various treatment options in modern science-

Phototherapy:  Narrowband UVB light therapy is an ideal match for re-pigmentation to cover a wide area of the body.  Extensive sittings from months to a year make up for a regular module of treatment. Although Constant sessions are needed to complete the regimen.

Topical creams: Corticosteroid creams can be a good alternative to high end surgery as they limit the number of anti-melanocyte antibodies produced. Tacrolimus, an immunosuppressant is also good for vitiligo.

Ayurveda studies autoimmune diseases erupting as a side effect to altered food consumption identifying them as “virudhaaharsevan”, that is, eating foods that are opposite in nature like eating fish and curd together. Secondly, there are certain auto-immune and inflammatory diseases such as Thyroid, Diabetes, Psoriasis and Pernicious Anemia which can trigger Vitiligo.
